After presenting impressive smartphone sales numbers for Q2 (33% up), the Chinese Smartphone vendor Xiaomi expands to Brazil. This is Xiaomi’s first step outside of Asia. Xiaomi devices will almost certainly grab the attention of a major part of the price sensitive Smartphone users. Are your agents and online service channels ready to support your customers with their Xiaomi related issues?  

Xiaomi’s VP International, Hugo Barra, states that Brazil is “stage one of our Latin America launch”, pointing at the Mexican and Colombian markets as logical next steps to take. Mr. Barra announced that the entry-level Redmi 2 smartphone would go on sale in Brazil for 499 reais (US$160). In contrast: the retail price of an unlocked iPhone6 can be more than US$1,000.

Brazil’s smartphone market is at a tipping point. With users changing their feature phones for smartphones mainly to keep up their social-media habits, smartphone penetration is increasing rapidly. Smartphone sales went up with 55% to 54.5 million units last year despite stagnant economic growth. Analyst firm IDC expects a further growth of 16% for 2015.
