2015 was a great year for new smartphones, with the iPhone 6S and Samsung Galaxy S6 as key releases. In this publication we look forward to the (expected) releases for 2016.

Apple iPhone 7 & iPhone 7 Plus
The new iPhone will most likely, following the tradition, be announced in September. Often heard rumours include – besides the size of the screen – the introduction of a new headphone jack and the introduction of the eSIM. The latter could cause a landslide in the Telecom industry, as it will enable subscribers to switch providers without the need of switching a physical SIM card.

Huawei: Android Marshmallow
In October 2015 Huawei released an overview of devices that will be upgraded to Android 6.0 Marshmallow in 2016. These devices include the devices including the Honor 7, Honor 6 Plus, Honor 6, as well as Honor 4x and 4C.

HTC One M10
The new HTC flagship will most likely be introduced in March, just prior MWC 2016. According to HTC, improvements can be expected for the design and display, as well as a few general performance updates.

Expected launch date: spring 2016. Although very little is known about the new flagship device of LG, rumours say that the G5 will be provided with an iris scanner. Although this isn’t a new technology, it will be for the first time that is will be available for a large audience. It is also expected that the G5 will have an improved battery that can be charged wirelessly.

Microsoft Surface Phone
The Surface Phone hasn’t been announced yet and it is far from certain it will be launched in 2016, but, according to Wired, Microsoft Corporate VP Panos Panay has been working on a prototype of a possible Surface Phone.

Nextbit Robin
February 2016 will most likely mark the entrance of the first smartphone vendor that is funded through Kickstarter. This cloud-first smartphone will likely feature a function that automatically optimise storage, for instance by moving photos, videos and unused apps to the cloud.

OnePlus: Android Marshmallow
OnePlus has announced that it will update OnePlus One and OnePlus 2 will be updated to Android 6.0 Marshmallow in Q1 2016. One of the new features will be native support for the Marshmallow API support for the fingerprint sensor. OnePlus also states that it is working to also update OnePlus X to Android 6.0 Marshmallow, but a release date hasn’t been announced yet.

Oppo Find 9
Although Oppo is not that known to the large public, it is often praised by experts for their high-quality smartphones. The company’s new flagship, Oppo Find 9, is expected to be released in 2016. Due to a new Snapdragon 810 processor and 4GB RAM, it will be a great device for playing games.

Samsung Galaxy S7 & S7 Edge
Following the tradition, MWC 2016 will most likely be the stage for the introduction of the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge. Key improvement will likely be in the processor and graphics, and will run on Android 6.0 Marshmallow. Sale of the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge is planned for April 2016.

Sony Xperia Z6
Little is known about the new Sony Xperia but it is expected that Sony will announce new offerings only once a year, instead of every six months. Therefore, it is expected that the Xperia Z6 will be released around September 2016. Performance and connectivity are key focus points for improvement.

Xiaomi Mi6
Within a short time Xiaomi has emerged from a local Chinese vendor into a strong global player on the smartphone market. It is expected that Xiaomi will release the Mi6 in Q1 2016.  Rumours say that it will be equipped with an upgraded display, processor, camera, wireless charging system and eye scanner. This will most likely make the Mi6 one of the top devices for 2016.
